B is for Basil
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) commonly known as Sweet basil and The King of herbs, is a pungent herb with its fresh leaves having a strong taste, similar to that of cloves with tastes similar to that of Tarragon and Eucalyptus also present throughout the plant.
There are over 150 species of Ocimum, several of which are eaten.
Basil is an annual plant, believed to be have been originally native to Africa and it is best known perhaps for its many uses in pastas and more notably in the puree forms, pesto and pistou.
Basil is available either fresh or dried and more recently it is also available frozen with other ingredients, pre-packed according to recipe.
